What a black screen reveals

Black is the mirror image of the white screen test — instead of finding black dots on white, you find glowing dots on black. A stuck pixel keeps its red, green, blue or white color while everything around it goes dark, and backlight bleed shows as pale halos creeping in from the edges or corners of an LCD panel.

For a fair test, dim the room lights and set brightness to maximum. Every IPS panel has some glow — the question is degree. To judge whether yours is normal, follow the photo comparison and warranty guidance in the screen bleeding test.

Using black screens on OLED displays

OLED panels light each pixel individually, so true black means the pixel is completely off. That makes a black screen the safest state for an OLED phone, TV or laptop: nothing ages while it rests, and faint image retention can fade with pixel-off time. The opposite habit — leaving bright static content (channel logos, taskbars, game HUDs) on screen for many hours — is what causes permanent OLED burn-in.

Wondering if your panel already has retention? Cycle through solid colors on the color screen test and look for faint ghost shapes, or run the full monitor test suite with gradients and uniformity patterns.

Black screen FAQ

How do I make my screen completely black?+

Click any black shade above and your whole display goes dark. Press Esc on a computer or tap the screen on a phone to exit.

What does a black screen test show?+

On black, stuck pixels glow red, green, blue or white, and backlight bleed appears as light leaking from the edges or corners. Test in a dark room for the clearest result.

Is a black screen good for OLED burn-in?+

Showing true black turns OLED pixels off completely, which rests them and can make faint burn-in from static elements less obvious over time. Avoid leaving any bright static image on OLED screens for hours.

Why does my black screen look gray?+

On LCD and mini-LED displays the backlight is always on, so black looks dark gray, especially in a bright room. On OLED, black is truly off. Uneven gray patches on LCD indicate backlight uniformity issues.
